In 1959 South Korea was mired in poverty. By 1979 it had a powerful industrial economy and a vibrant civil society in the making, which would lead to a democratic breakthrough eight years later. The transformation took place during the years of Park Chung Heeâs presidency. Park seized power in a coup in 1961 and ruled as a virtual dictator until his assassination in October 1979. He is credited with modernizing South Korea, but at a huge political and social! cost.
South Koreaâs political landscape under Park defies easy categorization. The state was predatory yet technocratic, reform-minded yet quick to crack down on dissidents in the name of political order. The nation was balanced uneasily between opposition forces calling for democratic reforms and the Park governmentâs obsession with economic growth. The chaebol (a powerful conglomerate of multinationals based in South Korea) received massive government support to pioneer new growth industries, even as a nationwide campaign of economic shock therapyâ"interest hikes, devaluation, and wage cutsâ"met strong public resistance and caused considerable hardship.
This landmark volume examines South Koreaâs era of development as a study in the complex politics of modernization. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources in both English and Korean, these essays recover and contextualize many of the ambiguities in South Koreaâs trajectory from poverty to a sus! tainable high rate of economic growth.
From its beautiful c! inematog raphy to its intense narrative to its absolutely lovable characters, it was just plain charming. - DramabeansSet during the 18th century when Korea was still known as Josun, Sungkyunkwan Scandal is the latest historical Korean TV drama series to delight audiences worldwide.
Sungkyunkwan, Josun s most prestigious school, has its own set of rigid rules (e.g. no girls!) that even the king can t touch. But that's all about to change because of four very special students! Kim Yoon-hee is a super smart girl, but she was born in an era when women were forbidden to study. To help support her grief-stricken family, she decides to pose as a boy and earn money from lazy scholars by doing their homework. One thing leads to another and she finds herself being accepted to Sungkyunkwan! But will she be able to hide her true identity (and avoid the punishment of death)?
Yoon-hee becomes friends with Lee Sun-joon, an uptight son-of-a-noble who loves following! the rules, Moon Jae-shin, a young man who is scarred by his brother s tragic death, and Gu Yong-ha, a free-spirited soul whose life is a bit more complicated than he lets on. These four unlikely friends find themselves embroiled in romantic rivalries, campus politics, and even a top-secret mission to help the king change the course of Korean history!Red Road Poster (11 x 17 Inches - 28cm x 44cm) (2006) Style A reproduction poster print

New York Times bestselling author Jenny McCarthy returns to her comic roots in this candid, wise, and witty look at women, men, sex, romance, heartbreak, love, and how (not) to fake it.
In Belly Laughs, Jenny McCarthy told you what you could really expect when you're expecting. In Baby Laughs and Life Laughs, she gave you the unfiltered ups and downs of motherhood and marriage. Now, in Love, Lust & Faking It, the inveterate truth teller turns the lights on for a funny, often poignant, and no-holds-barred look at the essence of relationships: love and sex.
Jenny explores the intensity of first love, introducing us to Ton! y, the boy of her teenage dreams, and Tubby, her dirty, sexy stuffed teddy bear. She takes us on a whirlwind tour of the world of aphrodisiacs and fetishes, explains the importance of playing doctor and other nice and naughty fantasies, and gives thanks for the pleasures of chocolate. And she sets the story straight on STDs, man junk and lady bits, why we really cheat, why women are master manipulators, the virtues of sex with the lights off, the power of a "loving no," the satisfaction of the perfect booty call, and so much more.
Filled with humorous stories about her own out-rageous exploitsâ"from becoming a Playboy Miss October to the pain of getting a discount boob job to meeting Brad Pittâ"as well as the lessons she's learned from family, friends, and fans, Love, Lust & Faking It takes on a subject the sex symbol, mother, television star, comedian, and divorcÃe can be trusted to examine with nothing but unvarnished honesty and earthy hu! mor. Throughout, Jenny reminds us to aim higher, believe in tr! ue love, and, most of all, be kind to ourselves. And to have lots of fun and sexâ"without faking it.

Reckless
- Will only work on DVD players, not recorders
Set to a driving rock score, Reckless captures three talents at the start of their careers. The film marks Quinn's (Legends of the Fall) film debut, showcases Hannah one month before she made a Splash with Tom Hanks and features a screenplay by Chris Columbus, whose Gremlins and The Goonies soon stormed the box office.
This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.
One of a series of "angry teen" moves in the '80s, Reckless (1984) stars Aidan Quinn as rebellious youth Johnny Rourke and Daryl Hannah as Tracey Prescott, an upper-class good girl who! falls in love with bad boy Johnny in a Rust Belt town. While! the fil m is well known for launching the careers of its young stars (Jennifer Grey and Adam Baldwin also appear in small roles, and Chris Columbus wrote the screenplay), it also distinguishes itself by the driving rock soundtrack. Romeo Void's "Never Say Never," Bob Seger's "Roll Me Away," Kim Wilde's "Kids in America," and three songs ("The One Thing," "Soul Mistake," and "To Look at You") from Shabooh Shoobah, an album from a then-unknown Australian band called INXS, punctuate the sizzling chemistry between Quinn and Hannah, especially in scenes on the dance floor and late at night at the high school. --David Horiuchi
